I refuse to believe that Johanna and Katniss didn’t stay friends after Mockingjay

I REFUSE

it’s not like Johanna has anyone else to visit :)

could you imagine several months after the war Katniss gets a knock on her door and there’s Johanna with all her belongings asking if she can stay and Katniss letting her because she knows she has nowhere else to go where people care about her

here’s why Mockingjay is a fantastic book. (unpopular opinion and book spoilers.)

areyousureimnotallright:

i fucking love the ending of Mockingjay. i like it better than the end of the Harry Potter series, and Harry is my number one jam. but honestly, with all the shit that went down in Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the ending is a true reflection of how humans deal with shit.

all of my friends hate the third book. i always disagree. a tiny part of this is due to the hopeless romantic inside of me who lives for a happy ending with the most perfect otp of all time (EVERLARK GAH). but aside from that, the entire series is a true tale of human struggle and sacrifice, and can easily work as a metaphor for life in general, even if it doesn’t involve war or rebellions. at times life fucking knocks you down. people die. relationships end. others count on you for strength. and how do you respond, as a living, breathing being on this earth? YOU GET THROUGH IT.

that’s what i take away from how Mockingjay ended. not to mention the incredible growth these characters have gone through over three books. people change, even over just a year, but particularly when lots of things happen to them in a short amount of time. but they also heal, they grow back together, they learn to forget and forgive and move on and find something else to do.

Katniss and Peeta didn’t fall in love in the same way. and this is important in order to truly understand their relationship. Peeta fell immediately, duh. but Katniss fell slowly, as she got to know him. and i don’t care what you say, he did not force her into anything, and the ending does not feel forced at all. her agony in the first half of Mockingjay is mostly due to not knowing what’s happening to Peeta, whom she’s grown to care for deeply. and these are remnants of the feelings she began to harbor at the end of Catching Fire. at the start of Mockingjay, she cherishes things he gave her, she remembers times they shared together, she does what anyone does when they miss someone they love. and then to fucking stay with someone who can’t remember you, who lashes out at you, in hopes that they’ll remember what you had, and what might have been? the tables were turned. now it was she who was in love with the nonreciprocating partner, and it speaks miles for her character and her love for him that she stayed around and tried to get him back. plus, do we really know what love is, and how it will make us feel and think and act, until we experience it ourselves?

i personally am a Mockingjay advocate from start to finish. and yes, the first part of the book is a little tough to get through, with Katniss grieving and essentially figuring out what the hell to do in District 13. but think of how it’s going to play in the film. it’ll be brilliant. and not only that, it is a true part of the human condition. figuring out the next step. finding normalcy again. learning how to deal with the pain. the reason i respect these books so much is because they explore what it means to be an imperfect, figuring-it-all-out person trying to exist and thrive in the world.

and as for the fate of my beloved Everlark, i like the ambiguity of their ending up together. to me it’s a happy ending, but it also is not without consequence. they are still two badly damaged people who depend on one another, like they always have, to get by. only this time of course it’s on a much more personal level. but there’s something so beautiful and poetic and real about that, about Peeta falling in love with her again, about Katniss having a family she never thought she’d want or need. about them figuring out how to exist, and even find some happiness, together. isn’t that how they got through the Games? twice? isn’t that how they led an entire nation into rebellion? together.

No one else can do this but h e r. She’s the face of this rebellion.

She won’t be able to handle it. The Games destroyed her.
